Vintage Images

Little Pink

Stella and Clyde

I really enjoy working with
vintage images. I generally
make up stories about them since I usually
have no idea where they came from. Sort
of long lost relatives!

that can be tucked away anywhere.

A Journey

I am heading to LA very
early tomorrow morning and
won't be adding any art
for a week, so I thought I'd
leave several images of work

for the week. I will be babysitting my
new granddaughter and I am
thrilled!!! Hope everyone has a happy
and creative week!!!

El Dia de los Muertos

This is one of my favorite
pieces. I made it about 3 years ago.
It is loaded with fun stuff; milagros,
vintage plastic Christmas lights,vintage
miniature light bulbs from my Dad's
workbench, a dead and heavily
sprayed cicada ,vintage jewelry
and
a vintage toy toilet from the 50's.
The small skeleton musicians on top
are from a wonderful shop , Folk Tree,
in Pasadena Ca.
I am very drawn to this holiday
of honoring ones family members
that have passed on. It also reminds
us all not to take ourselves too seriously!

Transparent Images

Stella
6"x6"
To get the transparent quality
of the tulip I used a paper
napkin. I saw an article in
Somerset Studio about the
technique.
Select a section of a paper
napkin that has an image
you would like to use.
Tear the shape then peel away
the back layer of napkin.
Position the image with glue.
That's it!

Reflections

I need to take some time
to sort and repack art work
from my last art fair of this
season. I'm sorry I only did
three shows this year. I really
enjoyed each one! Next year I
will get back on track and apply
to several, my regular shows
and some new ones too.

Feast of the Lanterns

We went to a wonderful Lantern Festival
in Spades Park yesterday evening.
There was music,food, crafts,
and families playing together.
An auction of handmade lanterns,
a children's parade and the
lighting of the lanterns
at dusk.
It was enchanting!!

Jokers to the Right
10"x30"

I have a special place in my heart for clowns,
even the scary ones.
Over 30 years ago I hosted some of the
Ringling Brothers clowns for dinner at my house
after shows when they were in town.We had
a young friend who was a mime, she studied with
famous mimes around the world, as did
some of the clowns. When the circus came
to town she would pick up a carload of the
guys after a show and bring
them to my house. Some would just
have dinner and go back ,others would
sleep at the house just for a change
of pace from the circus sleeping car.
The magic always began after dinner,
they would juggle my kitchen knives and
anything else they could get their hands on!!
They taught my son (Jason) to juggle when
he was eight. And, they always put him to
bed with his own special performance.
What magic!!
Some said they weren't always sure
which city they were in, things got to be
such a blur. They seemed to appreciate such
a small gesture as a meal and conversation.
What wonderful memories for a young
boy, now grown, to pass along to his daughter.
Clowns rock, even the scary ones.

My work is very influenced by Mexican folk art.
I love it! These pieces are from a series I'm working
on using Mexican tin ornaments as a collage element.

This photo was given to me by my sister. It is of a friend's mother as a young girl. She had sent it with a photo of her mother in the same pose today at 90! It was wonderful!

I have been working in a much smaller format for the last two months and I love it!! Most of the work is 6"x6". Vintage photos work well with the size and I find it very intimate, maybe because you need to be close to view them. I will post a few new ones in the coming days. Hope you enjoy them!!
